Well, on Second Thought Ashlie Byron HRM400-1ââ¬â Human Resources Development and Management Colorado State University ââ¬â Global Campus Jeffery Stevens September 15, 2016 Option #1: Money Doesnââ¬â¢t Buy Happiness. Well, on Second Thought In Case Study 10.1, Economics professor Richard Easterlin asserted that money couldnââ¬â¢t buy happiness. He based his findings of studies conducted in wealthy and very wealthy countries. His theory was that if happiness indeed were a ââ¬Å"commodityâ⬠that one could purchase, the wealthiest countries would have more purchasing power for happiness. Easterlin concluded from his research that the wealthier countries were not happier overall. Oneââ¬â¢s level of happiness did not increase with an increase in money. On the opposite end of the spectrum, individual happiness did not change between rich and poor individuals. This contrast has become known as the Easterlin Paradox. Easterlin asserted that oneââ¬â¢s relative income (comparison between oneââ¬â¢s income vs. anotherââ¬â¢s income) was more important than absolute income (income earned in a given time period). Betsy Stevenson has challenged Easterlinââ¬â¢s conclusions along with Juston Wolfers, from Wharton University, using data which included a larger sampling of countries with a more diverse GDP over a longer time span.
